The problem with traditional, carb-heavy breakfast foods, like cereal, toast and pastries, is that they give you “a lovely glucose spike that fuels your cells, and then you have a corresponding crash,” says Aujla. “You’re hungry [again] by mid-morning, and need coffee and other stimulants to keep yourself focused and up and running until lunchtime.” Instead, he recommends a meal high in protein and fiber—partly because we often generally skimp on protein, which we need for “longevity,” and partly because protein and fiber keep us energetic and satiated through the morning.

Aujla has a few go-to breakfasts along these lines. During the week, he relies on overnight oats that go easy on the actual oats. “I have two tablespoons of oats, two tablespoons of milled flax seed, one tablespoon of chia and one tablespoon of hemp seeds,” he says. “Then I’ll add grated apple, some pumpkin seeds, a bit of protein powder, and then water or coconut milk or whatever. I knew as soon as I clapped eyes on the honesty bar that I would like Updown Farmhouse in Kent – because nothing says “make yourself at home” quite like giving your guests free run of the drinks (and trusting them, moreover, to put it on their tab). I mixed a Martini, chalked it up to my room, and settled down to a game of Scrabble, soundtracked by tinkling jazz.

“We wanted Updown to feel very relaxed, like you were staying at a friend’s house, so having an honesty bar seemed like a natural thing to do,” says its proprietor Ruth Leigh. “Some nights you will go in there and there’s an impromptu party vibe, with people making friends and hanging out.” 

Honesty bars are also an essential part of Ett Hem, Stockholm’s 25-bedroom townhouse hotel. It has three – one for each living room – crafted in brass and wood by Studioilse and stocked with local spirits and vintage decanters filled with ready-mixed cocktails. Read more about it here.

When you are looking for help deciding which dining spots to try, there is plentiful input right at your fingertips from sources like Reddit, Yelp, and TripAdvisor, where thousands of people have given feedback based on their own personal experiences. In ranking the best hamburger, users on Reddit cited a clear favorite: Culver’s.

Culver’s is a burger chain that first opened its doors in 1984 in a small town called Sauk City, Wisconsin. In the ensuing decades, the restaurant has expanded to include more than 1,000 franchises, but it only exists in about half of the United States (26 of them, to be exact, as of April 2025). Steak fries. Steak fries are rarely spotted these days at upscale venues, and Park Ave Kitchen has a considered, of-the-moment menu, with entrees like bison short ribs and black sea bass tikka masala.

“I noticed them two weeks ago,” said the owner David Burke, on the phone one recent afternoon. “I was at the restaurant and I said, ‘What’s with the steak fries?’”

He had originally posed the question to Park Ave Kitchen’s chef, William Lustberg, but rather than paraphrase his answer, Mr. So totally have they lost the war for the American palate that every encounter with a steak fry is like meeting a Visigoth.

One gapes and wonders, how are you still here?
